The Cathedral of St Etienne of Bourges is considered a masterpiece of Gothic architecture due to the uniformity of its proportions and design. In 1992, it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites thanks to its striking features along with the community’s efforts to help maintain the area surrounding it in traditional 12th-century style.

Outside of the cathedral lies rows of half-timbered houses dating back to medieval times, many of which still maintain their roots. The gardens surrounding St. Etienne Cathedral create a beautiful juxtaposition of greenery and color against the stark whites and grays of the building.

Inside is where the cathedral truly shines. The choir room of the Cathedral of St Etienne contains an array of stained-glass windows artfully positioned across three levels. They manage to illuminate the stone walls with colored light in an expression of “lux continua,” popular among spiritualists in the late 12th century. Eminent families of Bourges developed the side chapels inside the main room in the 15th and 17th centuries with unique depictions, including the Annunciation.

The lower church also contains displays of the stone carvings first created in the 1240s, along with Romanesque side panels dating back to 1160. My favorite part of the cathedral was the array of paintings distributed throughout the building. These works of art include frescoes depicting the Crucifixion, among other beauties.

Overall, the Cathedral of St Etienne is a remarkable work of art that highlights the tenacity and dedication of the architects living in the 12th and 13th centuries. I highly recommend spending a couple of hours here when visiting Bourges.
