Renting a car (or using your own car) while traveling is arguably the best and most flexible way to see every square inch of a destination. Exploring in your own vehicle allows for a freedom not possible when relying on train or bus schedules. However, the conveniences of road travel also come with a few safety considerations, especially for solo travelers. Heed these tips when hitting the open road.
Insure yourself. Flat tires, fender benders and accidental damage are the basic ways a road trip can turn into a headache. Although these inconveniences may derail and delay your trip temporarily, having insurance will take the pressure off the possible financial repercussions that come with these issues. Whether you are renting a vehicle or you own the car you’re driving, research your insurance options before you buckle up.
Keep loved ones informed. Give your rough itinerary to someone you know and trust, and who is not going on the trip with you. Although modern GPS technology does wonders for vehicle and mobile phone location, there are areas of the world where the signal is poor. Along the same lines, consider renting or purchasing a GPS device or ensuring you will be able to use Google Maps while navigating unfamiliar terrain.
Drive defensively. This tip is especially valuable in foreign countries where there are different rules (and sometimes different sides) of the road. Let the fast-driving locals pass you on two-lane roads, pull over if you’re lost and maintain the speed limit at all times.
