In general, you are quite safe traveling in Eastern Europe. If you feel comfortable in most of Europe, this will most likely be no different. That said, there are always things to keep in mind while traveling and they apply doubly for women and minorities.
First, be organized and aware of your surroundings at all times. Relax with friends, but don’t get drunk and wander down a dark alley late at night. Make new friends, but don’t put yourself in unsafe situations.
Second, keeping track of your person is important, but also keep track of your possessions. Beware of petty theft like muggings and pickpocketing, but also don’t leave your bags unattended. Scams can abound with regard to taxi services or lodging, so use approved taxis and arrange for your stay before arriving.
Lastly, in the event you are hiking in the deep wilderness of Croatia or Albania, as well as a few other countries, beware of landmines. There are still some areas in which this poses a threat.
It is also a good idea to keep the numbers of U.S. Embassies on hand in case of emergencies and to check out the State Department’s website for the most updated information before you leave for your trip.
