Johannesburg is one of the most exciting cities in South Africa, but it’s not without its problem. The city is known for a massive divide between the wealthy and poor and as such there’s been an upsurge in crime over the last few decades. Here are some tips for staying safe.

Avoid the “No-Go” Zones

While there are plenty of tourist-friendly areas in Johannesburg, you need to plan to stay out of Hillbrow, Berea, Yeoville and Alexandra. The crime rates here are staggering and tourists are regular targets.

Don’t Drive With Windows Down

“Smash and grab” attacks are commonplace in Johannesburg, especially against those who drive around with their windows down and cars unlocked when they pull to a stop. Do not roll your windows down in unfamiliar areas.

Look Cheap

The first person a thief is going to target is the one with the most expensive looking jewelry and clothes. Look as cheap as possible and don’t carry a purse when you’re out and about; leave it at the hotel and carry a plastic bag instead.

Stay in Touristy Areas

While traveling off the beaten path is often one of the best parts of exploration, sometimes it’s just dangerous. Stick to the popular tourist areas while in Johannesburg that are heavily guarded and don’t travel to areas at night that aren’t well lit.
