With the recent release of the film IT, Stephen King’s works are more popular than ever. The prolific author’s short stories and novels are prime material for film and television adaptations. With work spanning decades and more release dates planned, check out some of King’s best stories before you watch.
Children of the Corn
King’s short story about creepy kids inspired a film franchise of the same name. The original film debuted in 1984, with several sequels released through 2011. Some say the short story is much scarier than the film. Read to find out.
IT
The iconic horror novel clocks in at nearly 1,200 pages. If that page count is daunting, check out the 1990 television miniseries or the 2017 film. The film’s sequel is set to come out in 2019.
Misery
The psychological thriller about a famous author injured in a car crash then taken in by a die-hard fan was quickly made into a film starring Kathy Bates and James Caan. Bates earned an Academy Award for her performance.
The Body
This novella is better known to most by the film’s title, Stand By Me. The coming-of-age tale is a departure from some of King’s more graphic horror stories and some viewers may not even realize it is based on his story.
The Shining
King famously disliked Stanley Kubrick’s adaption of his novel The Shining. The filmmaker took many liberties with the plot, much to the disappointment of King. Decide for yourself which version you prefer.
