Stretch Your Budget in Cuba

Tips / Destination

As reforms make Cuba more accessible to U.S. tourists, the island is becoming an increasingly popular destination.

In anticipation of a predicted wave of visitors from the north, many travelers from around the world are making their way to Cuba this summer. As a result, prices are rising in what has always been a relatively expensive destination.

It sounds basic, but the best way to save costs in Cuba is to travel in a group. Unlike many other countries, there are no real backpacker hostels. The most common form of lodging is the casa particular, where you effectively rent the spare room in someone’s house.

The owners rent by the room, so if there are three beds the solo traveler is forced to pay for them all. Traveling in a group of three means accommodation costs are split three ways.

This also rings true for transport. Cuba has a relatively undeveloped bus network and it is easier to get around in taxis. With three or four people in a group, a private car will normally work out just as cheap as bus tickets for everyone.

If you are alone, you can save money in other ways. Many travel guides say you do not need to deal in Cuban pesos, which is the currency used by locals. However, if you have some, you will be able to buy fruit, pastries and other food from street vendors that do not accept the convertible peso. This is a great way to keep costs down as you can eat fruit and baked goods for less than $1.

If you want to go for a drink, look out for government-run bars. Beers here cost just $1 each as the prices are capped by the state, whereas tourist bars sell the same lagers for up to three times the price.
