Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

According to a new study from photoAiD, an online service helping capture passport and visa photos online, film tourism is up, and for good reason.

Film tourism, also known as visiting settings or shooting locations from favorite shows or movies, is incredibly popular. Nearly 100 percent of the survey respondents who participated in the photoAiD study said they visited a place associated with a favorite TV show or movie, at least once. About 80 percent of those people said they planned to engage in film tourism in 2023.

More than half of respondents said they enjoy film tourism because the experience allows travelers to follow in the footsteps of favorite characters and “live out” one’s favorite TV show or movie. Of course, some TV shows and movies are more popular than others. Favorite film tourism spots include Harry Potter-associated locations in the United Kingdom and Ireland, as well as Jurassic Park shooting locations found in Hawai’i.

However, there’s one key thing to remember if you plan on visiting a film or TV show spot in the coming year. The survey found nearly 70 percent of respondents negatively view travelers who “misbehave” or “strike irreverent poses” when visiting film or TV sites that are also the sites of real-life tragedies.
