As summer increases in intensity, many of us are wondering just how to maintain our normal daily routine given the energy-sapping heat.
Arguably the best way to beat the heat is to avoid it at all costs by implementing a change in your normal waking hours. If you are traveling in Latin America or the Caribbean, you may have noticed many locals get up extremely early to make the most of the cool morning hours. They then take a nap in the heat of the early afternoon before rising again when things cool down.
If you must be out in the heat of the day, take an umbrella to block the worst of the sun. Keep your skin covered in light material as direct sunlight is a great source of heat.
To keep yourself in fine fettle, you will also need to think about hydration. On holiday, it is tempting to indulge in a few more drinks than normal given the fact you don’t necessarily have to get up the next day. However, alcohol dehydrates and places extra strain on your body, which is already struggling with increased levels of perspiration. Drink less beer and more water to prevent heat stroke.
Reduce your core temperature by drinking hot drinks instead of cold. This will make you feel cooler. Consider eating small, light meals which do not place undue stress on your digestive system. Heavy meals divert energy away from your brain and other organs, reducing energy levels already suffering due to the heat.
There is no reason you can’t beat the heat if you follow these simple tips.
