Sustainable tourism is the philosophy that when you visit a destination as a tourist, your actions should only leave a positive impact on the environment, culture, economy and society of that destination. It’s about making sure tourists refrain from unknowingly destroying the local environment or harming the culture and peoples of a destination throughout their visit. Just as travel can be enriching and life-changing for the traveler, it should also be a positive experience for the residents of the destinations being traveled to. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council creates the guidelines for international sustainable tourism and validates travel organizations which follow the predetermined guidelines. You can visit their site for a list of hotels that meet their standards, and you may be surprised at the well-known hospitality brands you’ll find there, such as Hilton and Radisson Blu.

One of the most simple and easy-to-follow aspects of sustainable tourism is to participate in the local economy and culture. Research your destination before your trip so you know in advance where to find locally owned and operated accommodations, restaurants and activities. If you’re shopping for souvenirs, look for items locally crafted rather than a run-of-the-mill trinket. You’ll end up with more interesting travel stories if you take the time to participate in the community through shopping, eating and having fun the way the locals do.
