Pro tip: Don’t even think about scoping out the newly opened Europabrücke (Europe Bridge) in Switzerland if you’re afraid of heights.
The bridge, now the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge, allows hikers to cross 949 meters between Grächen and Zermatt over the Grabengufer ravine in southern Switzerland.
The bridge spans as high as 85 meters in the air, and replaces the old bridge, closed in 2010 after being damaged by unstable terrain and falling rocks.
The new construction is located around 200 meters down from the original, but it saves hikers a one-kilometer round-trip down into the valley and back up along hiking trails.
One comforting fact: The bridge has been engineered with 8 tons of cable to prevent swaying.
The Europabrücke completes the famed Europaweg long-distance hiking trail, a two-day walk originally opened in 1997 and passing through the villages of St. Niklaus, Grächen, Randa, Täsch and Zermatt. The trail also circumnavigates Switzerland’s highest mountain, the Dom, and passes the country’s celebrated Matterhorn peak.
