At the end of Philadelphia’s Market Street, near Penn’s Landing, is one of Philadelphia’s most famous watering holes, Mac’s Tavern. In a location that was formerly home to Skinners, Mac’s carries the seedy dive bar aesthetic without any of the seediness. The lighting is dark and the wooden counters, walls and floors are even darker. Still, there is a welcoming and homey feeling about the place that cannot be ignored.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Prime Meats, located in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn. Being a chilly, fall day, the coziness and tavern-like atmosphere of the restaurant was exactly what we were looking for. Although, it was a Saturday night and we did not have a reservation, we arrived early enough for them to squeeze us in for an early dinner.

Looking for an inexpensive and clean hotel in Philadelphia’s historic district, my friends and I found Hotel Monaco, conveniently located in Old City steps from the Liberty Bell and the neighborhood’s best restaurants. Though we arrived on a busy Friday afternoon, my group was immediately escorted to the uniquely decorated lobby, decked out in fun yellow and red-striped wallpaper, and checked in by a polite employee standing in front of a hot pink wall adorned with hanging brushes of different sizes and styles.
