Palace, castle, fortress, religious monument, garden, hotel. The Alhambra (Arabic for ¨the red one¨) encompasses all of these elements within its walls as a massive testament to religious harmony high above the Andalusian city of Granada.
A visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site is most wisely accomplished during the low tourism season, between November and March. Although the temperatures can drop pretty low on account of the neighboring Sierra Nevada mountain range, the autumnal colors shine under the sun, making the scenery even more stunning.
Once inside the compound, it may seem unfathomable only 32 gardeners are employed to maintain the perfectly manicured landscape.
The Alhambra served a myriad of functions since its inception in the 9th century. Remains of its purposes are still present as Moorish influences coalesce with Christian modifications. Despite numerous additions and amendments through the centuries, the original plumbing system composed of various aqueducts are still in use today.
The combinations of religious architecture and remains of some of the original infrastructure make the Alhambra a structural beauty and remind society of the days when different religions could coexist in a semblance of peace.
The grounds of the Alhambra are open to general admission (€14 per adult) and include access to the palaces, the fortress and the Generalife gardens, and advanced purchase is highly recommended, especially in the high season.
