At first blush, the small town of Cordova, on Alaska’s south central coast, appears to not have much going for it other than scenery. On a clear day, the backdrop is an impressive wall of mountains that plunge toward the sea, but there otherwise would seem to be little draw for visitors.
Look beyond the surface and you’ll find plenty of interest here, though. The town, famous for its proximity to the Copper River, is renowned for its high-quality salmon, and most people in the area fish for a living or have some tie to fishing. You can learn about the history with a historic walking tour (brochures available at the Historical Society and Museum) or at the museum itself, on the main drag in town.
Further your education at other spots like the Prince William Sound Science Center or the U.S. Forest Service Interpretive Center. The Copper River Delta Shorebird Festival is a major draw, as is the Cordova Fungus Festival, which brings mushroom hunters into the forest.
To learn about native culture, the llanka Cultural Center has you covered. To view the incredible glaciers and mountains up close, consider a float plane tour with Scenic Mountain Air.
