Visiting ancient temples and mosques is a highlight for most travelers, but, judging from recent news articles, it poses quite a risk for tourists unfamiliar with local cultures. To avoid getting fined or arrested in a foreign country, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the appropriate dress code.
Cover Your Shoulders
It’s generally frowned upon to show skin in a place of worship, which is why many temples have rules in place about covering your shoulders. Always cover up with a shawl or shirt that is modest so as not to offend traditional cultures.
No Shorts
Like shoulders, legs are not to be shown off when visiting holy sites overseas. Men and women should avoid wearing shorts or skirts that show off skin. Instead, opt for pants or jeans.
Covered Toes
Sandals are generally seen as disrespectful and feet can be seen as unclean in many cultures. Wear shoes that cover your toes. Conversely, there are temples where it’s forbidden to wear shoes at all and require you to go barefoot or wear only socks. That’s why it’s important to read the rules ahead of time.
Hair
Many cultures forbid women from showing their hair inside of temples and mosques for religious reasons. Whether you agree with the practice or not, it’s still important to respect local views to avoid ending up in jail. Cover your head with a shawl or hijab when necessary.
