Tips for First Timers in a Big City

Tips / Travel

First-time visitors to a big city may be in for the ultimate culture shock. Loud noises, fast-moving locals and a dizzying labyrinth of busy streets can be overwhelming for those who are used to more somber environments. See below for a few tips to help newbies who are visiting a large international city for the first time.

Be on alert for scams. Big cities are notorious for scammers who target tourists and charge exorbitant fees for taxi cab rides, tickets to events and attractions and even photo opportunities with costumed characters. Avoid making eye contact with these street peddlers and if they don´t get the hint, a firm ¨no¨ is always effective. For tickets, cabs and other services, consult with your hotel concierge or the airport information desk, instead.

Keep your map hidden. Nothing draws pickpockets in like a foreigner with a map. Plan your route before you take to the streets, and if you do need a real-time reference, ask a local or be discrete with your paper map.

Expand your horizons. The city may have more attractions than you have time, but don´t neglect the nearby neighborhoods just outside the city limits. These hubs often harbor the more authentic side of the city where locals´ apartments and cozy cafes line the sidewalks, instead of corporate buildings and hotels.

Do your research. Big-city prices are not known to be budget friendly, but a bit of advanced research can clue you into where to find the best happy hours, cheapest theater tickets and least expensive forms of inter-city transit (i.e., the subway!).
