The Pacific Crest Trail is the dream hike of many outdoor adventurers. If you’re planning on traveling the West Coast’s most epic trail, there are a few ways you need to prepare.
Pack Light
You’ll spend days alone on the trail, far away from any sign of civilization in some areas, so it’s important you have everything you need on hand. However, you don’t want to pack so much stuff in your pack you can’t carryit for long periods at a time. Don’t load yourself down with books or too many clothes.
Stay Safe
There are numerous dangers along the PCT, of both human and animal variety. Always carry along a safety whistle to scare away large predators. You might even consider carrying a weapon, if you’re qualified to handle it.
Resupply Often
There are resupply stops all along the trail, but sometimes you’ll go days between them. Make sure you pack your resupply boxes fully and efficiently. Always have cash on hand in case your box doesn’t arrive, for whatever reason, so you can purchase new supplies in a pinch.
Make Friends
The PCT is a great adventure for solo hikers, but part of the fun is spending short spans tagging along with other hikers. The people you meet along the way are what make the PCT so special. Don’t be afraid to make friends as you go.
