If you’re exploring the Middle East, chances are at one point or another you’re going to find yourself seated upright on the back of a camel. These creatures are a common form of transportation in the desert but riding one isn’t the same as riding a horse. Here are some tips before you hop on the back of a hump.
Mount Carefully
Camels can be taught to be patient with riders, but you still need to be careful mounting one. Getting your leg up and over the hump is tricky and camels don’t always like to stay in place. Make sure someone is holding him or he’s tied to something before putting your foot in the stirrup.
Stay in Line
Camels prefer to travel single-file so don’t try and ride side-by-side with your friend. This could lead to fights or cause your camel to run up ahead (with you losing control) in order to maintain the line.
Bring Pain Medicine
Riding a camel is hard on your body, especially if you find yourself doing it for hours on end. Bring along some pain medication to combat the aches that are sure to develop in your hips, legs and butt.
Lean Back Upon Starting
Most camels will sit on the ground while you mount and they tend to ride from their hind legs, thrusting you forward if you’re not careful. Lean back in the saddle when it starts to stand to help balance.
Don’t Stand in Front
If you find yourself on the ground next to your camel, don’t stand in front of it. They’ll blow snot or foam all over your face.
