Greek food is famous all over the world. Where better to sample it than the capital, Athens?

After eating the famous gyros wraps for a while, it might feel like time to treat yourself. At Varoulko Seaside, a Michelin-starred restaurant overlooking the harbor in Piraeus, you can do just that. It’s renowned as the best seafood spot in Athens.

The Plaka district might normally be the preserve of tourists, but the food at Psarras restaurant is so good even Athenians brave the crowds to sample it. You can listen to the live music while you eat authentic Greek dishes in a romantic setting.

Café Avissinia has a rooftop terrace with views to the Acropolis, and live music accompanies the Anatolian-influenced dishes. Think Greek cooking but with cumin and fresh mint.

A visit to Greece wouldn’t be complete without eating in a taverna, and Tzitzikas kai Mermigas (Grasshopper and Ant) is a modern take on an old favorite. It’s right near Syntagma Square, and the food can be unusual.

Another modern taverna is Strofi, which has a romantic roof terrace with Acropolis views to boot. The all-white décor might feel bare, but it’s nice in the summer heat.
