Kansas City is known for its great barbecue. Whether you like dives or chains, there is something for everyone. Start your Kansas City barbecue experience with these five spots.
Known as the “King of Ribs,” Arthur Bryant opened the restaurant in 1958. Besides its slow-cooked meat, Arthur Bryant’s is known for its vinegar-based sauce. Its barbecue attracted famous individuals from Jack Nicolson to Barack Obama.
More than just a barbecue restaurant, Char Bar boasts a 10,000-square-foot beer garden complete with backyard games. As far as menu options, brisket and ribs are standouts, as are sides like the jalapeño cheesy corn bake.
A favorite among barbecue fans, Jack Stack is known for its saucy burnt ends. For those who can’t make it to one of the five locations, Jack Stack ships its products across the country.
One of the most popular and well-known joints on the list, Joe’s is known for its Z-Man sandwich (made with brisket, cheese and onion rings). While there are several locations, make sure you go to the original at the gas station. Arrive early, as the line starts forming before the doors open.
A newer spot on the list, Q39 has been open since 2014. The chef-owner honed his craft at barbecue competitions around the country. Order a barbecue plate to try different meat and sides. The bar usually has available seating if the wait for a table is long.
