Top 5 / North America

Cancun may be the most famous place in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, but there are other amazing beaches you should make an effort to visit.

Isla Mujeres

Close to Cancun, this island boasts some incredible stretches of sand you can visit by ferry. You can stay the night at one of the various hotels, or head back to the mainland after a relaxing day.

Tulum

Once a hidden secret of the Yucatan, Tulum has become a favorite spot for visitors keen to take in the amazing beaches and the Mayan ruins that sit directly above them. A new wave of boutique hotels means Tulum has never been such an attractive destination.

Isla Holbox

This island is a favorite with hip Mexicans, who come from across the country to relax on the pristine sands. It’s only 40 miles from Cancun, but Holbox feels like another world.

Akumal

Just 60 miles south of Cancun lies Akumal Beach, known as the “land of the turtles” due to the number of the animals that lay their eggs here. Time your visit for hatching season or visit at any time of year to enjoy diving or snorkeling on the reef that lies just off shore.

Maroma

Skip the crowded center of Playa del Carmen and head off to Maroma Beach, just 10 minutes north of town. Visit for a day or stay in one of the eco-friendly hotels that line the sand.
