Want to enjoy a relaxing getaway among nature, but don’t want to be too far away from it all? Prefer to stick closer to cell service? Maybe you want to camp in a different region of the country, but would like to make an easier trip of it, flying into a major airport near where you’ll be camping. Whatever your reasons, here are some of the best camping destinations located near major cities.

Harriman State Park

Just an hour’s drive from New York City, you’ll find Harriman State Park, where you can get away from the hubbub of NYC, while being close enough to enjoy its perks (if you so desire). Hike a little on the Appalachian Trail, or enjoy some cycling, mountain biking, boating, swimming or kayaking. Plus, as a state park, this camping choice offers bonus perks like showers.

Shenandoah National Park

One of the most gorgeous national parks is Shenandoah, located conveniently close to Washington, D.C. The views are beautiful and there are tons of hiking trails. There are four different campgrounds, or you can even get a permit to camp off the grid if that’s your thing.

Leo Carrillo State Park

If you dream of camping near the beach, head to Los Angeles. Leo Carrillo State Beach offers camping that puts you within walking distance of the shore, so you can surf, swim, fish or just lounge about. Or, you’re right next to the Santa Monica Mountains if you’d prefer to spend your days hiking.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

If your dream waters look a little more Caribbean than Pacific, go camp just a short drive from Miami, at this state park located in the Keys. You can enjoy all the water activities you love, while also benefiting from a well-equipped campground with the amenities you need.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park

So close to Denver, this state park is just 20 miles from the city, but seems so much further away. There’s plenty of wildlife, no cell phone service and lots of wide, open spaces. In fact, there are more than 120 camping sites to choose from, and that includes cabins, yurts and three-sided structures for the more primitive campers among us. Some of the cabins and yurts are even suitable for pets.
