Chemical Heritage Foundation
The Chemical Heritage Foundation is an institution for the history of science. The building is home to a library, archive, museum, conference center and research center. Check the calendar for special events and activities. Hours vary seasonally and the Foundation is closed on holidays.
Edgar Allan Poe House
Edgar Allan Poe lived in Philadelphia for six years. During this time he penned the famous stories A Tell-Tale Heart and The Fall of the House of Usher. The site is open Friday–Sunday, 9 a.m.–12 p.m. and 1 p.m.–5 p.m.
Fireman’s Hall Museum
Located in a restored firehouse in Philadelphia’s Old City neighborhood, the collection at the Fireman’s Hall Museum includes firefighting tools and machines, uniforms, prints and photographs. The museum is open 10 a.m.–4 p.m., Tuesday–Saturday with extended hours until 9 p.m. on the first Friday of each month. While admission is free, the museum requests donations.
The Liberty Bell Center
A trip to Philadelphia isn’t complete without a stop at the Liberty Bell. Learn about the Bell’s iconic crack and view exhibits detailing the history and cultural significance of the Bell. The visitor center is open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily, with extended summer hours. Visitors must pass through a security screening before entering the center.
The United States Mint
The United States Mint in Philadelphia offers free self-guided tours with audio/video stations throughout the exhibit. Visitors have the opportunity to view the actual coining operations from above the factory floor. The mint is open Monday–Friday 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with special weekend hours during the summer and select holidays. Photo ID is required to enter the building.
