The Gothic churches of France are home to some of Europe’s most important historical moments. Their raw beauty and extravagant architecture make them one of the country’s biggest draws for tourists around the world. Here are five of the top Gothic churches you need to see when visiting.
The Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris is the most prominent cathedral in all of France. Its historical relevance as a location of some of the country’s most memorable moments, along with the stunning stained-glass windows and flying buttresses make it famous worldwide. Inside you’ll find some of the greatest examples of architecture and artwork in Europe.
Albi Cathedral is a wonder of human architecture and thought by many to be the largest brick building on Earth. The unique and awe-inspiring building towers over the surrounding town and, thanks to its age and unique materials, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2010.
Rouen Cathedral is one the most striking of the Gothic cathedrals in France and also lays claim to the tallest spire. This work of art stands tall against the countryside and can be seen from quite the distance. Inside you’ll find the remains of one of France’s most revered rulers, King Richard the Lionheart.
This enormous cathedral was built on top of the grave of Saint Denis, a Bishop of Paris who died in 250 AD, and lies just north of the capital city. Inside rests the remains of 43 kings and 32 queens from France’s storied monarchy.
Sharing its namesake with the country’s most notable cathedral, Notre-Dame de Chartres might actually be the best example of Gothic architecture in Europe. The UNESCO World Heritage site draws nearly as many visitors as its sister cathedral.
