The Merida region used to be dominated by plantations known in Spanish as haciendas. Today, many of the colonial-era buildings are still in use as hotels or restaurants. Here are five of the best to visit.
The city expanded to the extent this hacienda is just on the outskirts, but it’s still amazingly beautiful. Recently restored to its former glory by new owners, there are luxurious suites popular with honeymooners, a well-reviewed restaurant and sumptuous cocktails on the veranda.
There are 12 bedrooms available at this restored hacienda, all furnished with antique furniture imported from France. It’s more expensive than many other haciendas, with double rooms at around $500 per night, but if you really want to splurge, this is a great place to do so.
This 17th-century plantation house is better for budget travelers, with the two rooms considerably more affordable than other haciendas. If you don’t want to stay you can visit during the day.
Thanks to an on-site museum, this hacienda has added interest for those interested in the henequen trade that made Merida so wealthy. You can visit the grand main building, but also see how Mayan workers produced henequen in terrible conditions.
Perfectly situated for visiting the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, this 16th-century landmark is set in amazing gardens. There is also an on-site spa if you want to pamper yourself.
