October embraces travelers with crisp, fall air and colorful foliage. But October also marks the most spectacularly spooky time of year to travel. Turn your next vacation into a ghastly experience with one of these top five haunted houses.
Netherworld Haunted House
Steady your nerves of steel for a walk through Netherworld Haunted House in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Guests feel like they walk on to a movie set with props, 125 live actors, lasers, special effects and actor-controlled puppets for a comprehensive scare. New changes keep guests coming back every year for unique, non-stop scares.
Eastern State Penitentiary
Go behind the walls at Eastern State Penitentiary for a terrifying Halloween experience. As the world’s first true penitentiary, the prison opened more than 180 years ago and was designed to inspire true regret in the hearts of prisoners. The Terror Behind the Walls experience takes brave visitors through six attractions, including an Infirmary, Machine Shop, Lock Down, Break Out, Quarantine and Blood Yard, all with appropriate names and experiences. In between scares, learn more about the paranormal experiences dating back to the 1940s by visitors and prisoners alike within the 30-foot-high fortress walls.
13th Gate
Terrifying visitors in Baton Rouge, the 13th Gate is known for its ultra-realism and detailed haunted house experience. The experience leaves no detail left untouched and creates claustrophobic cellars, voodoo shows, snake-infested swamp and blood-curdling scream encounters. As one of the top haunted attractions in the country, the 13th Gate is scary enough they suggest keeping anyone pregnant or with pre-existing heart conditions away.
Dent Schoolhouse
There’s nothing scarier than a creepy schoolhouse taunting children and grown-ups alike. According to legend, janitor Charlie haunts the historic Dent Schoolhouse. The story continues that Charlie was responsible for murdering dozens of kids and hiding the decaying bodies in the school basement. Explore the haunted schoolhouse, or come on a Lights Out night with just a glow stick to lead your way.
Asylum 49 at Tooele Hospital
The terror gets real at Asylum 49 at Tooele Hospital in Utah. As the state’s biggest paranormal hot spot, the hospital once housed the poor before becoming an under-funded hospital. Forced to stack bodies in an unrefrigerated room until the coroner came, the Asylum is known for hauntings like a nurse in white, a man in black and a little girl, among other paranormal activity. Perhaps most terrifying of all is half of the area is now a care center for the elderly who regularly report paranormal activity.
