Top 5 / North America

Boise, Idaho, is a surprisingly vibrant capital tucked in the foothills of the Pacific Northwest. It has an abundance of museums to choose from, all of which detail the rich history and art of the region.

The Old Idaho State Penitentiary

The Old Idaho State Penitentiary was a prison opened in 1872 that housed some of the most famous and violent criminals in the Old West. Today, it’s been converted into a massive museum complex that contains artifacts of the prison where you can learn about the harsh conditions of prison life back then.

Idaho Military History Museum

The West hasn’t played as vital a role in the country’s military history than other regions, but the Idaho Military History Museum is a great home for the relics of the Spanish American War and both World Wars. It contains large firearm displays and memorabilia including two Medals of Honor.

MK Nature Center

The Morrison Knudsen Nature Center is a wonderful place to explore Idaho’s rich wildlife. The location on the Boise River GreenBelt provides ample opportunities to discover local wetlands, beaver dam exhibits and even some underwater viewing windows to see what happens beneath the river’s surface.

Boise Art Museum

The Boise Art Museum offers a great deal of exhibits highlighting the works of artists from the Pacific Northwest. This non-profit organization also holds drawing and craft workshops for children and adults.

The World Center for Birds of Prey

The World Center for Birds of Prey is a 580-acre campus used to repopulate and reintroduce wild birds back into nature. Not only does it hold the largest flock of California Condors in captivity, but you’ll also find nature trails, live bird presentations, falconry exhibits and breeding centers to explore.
