Saline di Margherita di Savoia
The largest saltworks in Italy, and one of the biggest in Europe, sits inside a protected area. It’s home to flamingoes and many other species of bird.
Gargano National Park
This park covers the Gargano peninsula and contains many different ecosystems, including the Tremiti islands marine reserve and the Foresta Umbra, an ancient forest. There are great resorts like Peschici and Vieste, which you can use as a base to explore the rest of the park.
Gravina di Puglia
Gravine are deep ravines that develop due to water erosion, common in Puglia. You’ll find an array of gravine in the Alta Murgia national park, which make for spectacular landscapes.
Torre Guaceto
This marine reserve is home to dunes, swamps, sparkling waters and sandy beaches. Head to the Adriatic coast near Salento to explore the park.
Foresta Mercadante
Another part of the Alta Murgia national park, this forest was planted in 1928 after an existing one washed away in flooding. Today, it’s a protected area full of cedars, oaks and cypresses, making for a popular picnic spot.
