Top 5 / North America

A common misunderstanding is that that Oktoberfest takes place in October, when it is actually held during the last week of September. This is when the Munich beer halls fill up with German citizens wearing their finest dirndl and lederhosen. You may also get a peek at those gigantic beer steins that can hold what looks to be a gallon of beer at a time.

Even if Oktoberfest is held in late September in Germany, American invention has it lasting well into October. So grab some Lederhosen, or maybe just a large mug and celebrate with your fellow revelers at any number of places around Chicago.

St. Alphonsus’ Oktoberfest

Plan ahead for next year! St. Alphonsus’ Oktoberfest was bigger than ever this year, held Sept. 29–Oct. 1. This festival on Chicago’s North Side has no shortage of spirit.

DANK Haus in Chicago

DANK Haus in Chicago holds an Oktoberfest event later in the season, Oct. 20. German food and music abound while admission and yodeling are free.

Revolution Brewery

Revolution Brewery celebrated a massive block party on the last weekend of September, but visit this essential North Side brewery any time for one of the best beer selections in the city.

Bohemian House

If a quieter atmosphere is what you are after and a more filling meal, visit Bohemian House for a traditional German restaurant with a twist.

Evanston Craft Beer

Sometimes a more suburban feel is what you are after. Try the Evanston Craft Beer Oktoberfest: http://downtownevanston.org/oktoberfest on Oct. 15, for good food, beer and music in a more relaxed location along Lake Michigan.
