As popular tourism destinations begin to fill up with foreigners and, thus, put restrictions into place regarding the number of daily visitors, travelers are looking to go elsewhere to avoid the crowds and potential tourism taxes added on top of hotel room rates and attractions. Hot spots like Cinque Terre in Italy and Barcelona, Spain, have been searching for ways to limit visitors as the integrity and character of these sites are in danger of losing their luster and experiencing damage to their infrastructure. Instead of continuing to bear down on these beaten paths, consider the following nearby cities for a taste of similarity without the overzealous throngs.

Madrid, Spain

Barcelona’s chic neighbor to the west is also Spain’s capital. Barcelona’s location on the Mediterranean makes it a popular stop for cruise ships, but head a bit inland to Madrid to experience a more authentic Spanish city.

Portofino, Italy

With Cinque Terre’s newly implemented annual tourist cap of 1.5 million people, travel north instead to the equally beautiful seaside town of Portofino. Colorful buildings and cliff-side hikes abound along the Adriatic coastline.

Amsterdam, the Netherlands

When seeking a city of charming canals, opt for Amsterdam instead of the selfie stick invasion that has been taking over Venice, Italy. Springtime in the Netherlands is complete with the nation’s signature tulips and hours of biking trails.

Padua, Italy

Speaking of the crowded canals and overpriced attractions of Venice, the nearby town of Padua is a charming respite set in Italy’s quaint countryside. Centered around the university, visitors can enjoy Byzantine architecture and quiet cobblestone streets while sipping on some of the world’s best coffees.

Girona, Spain

Approximately one hour north of the busy Catalan capital of Barcelona is its less visited but just as beautiful neighbor, Girona. Step back in time among medieval churches and buildings throughout the city’s Old Quarter, and enjoy extra breathing room might not find among the crowds in Barcelona.
