Norway cemented itself as a force to be reckoned with in the burgeoning Scandinavian food scene thanks to a wealth of inspired chefs opening restaurants throughout Oslo. It’s smaller, former capital of Bergen has plenty of its own delightful eateries to boast about, yet hasn’t seen quite the same amount of recognition. Here are a few places worth checking out.
Bryggeloftet & Stuene rests alongside the historic harbor in a high tourist area, which would normally make it a place to avoid, but the delicious, traditional food here makes it an exception to the rule. Inside you’ll find home-style meals ranging from burgers, fish and reindeer to vegetarian lasagna.
Finding affordable food in Bergen is tricky and few places offer great prices in combination with delicious meals like Anne Madam. This little jewel is tucked away near the Fish Market in a building around since 1702. Inside you’ll find a small menu with tasty treats like reindeer meatballs and whale steak, along with a tapas bar.
The seafood-heavy menu at Enhjøringen contains such delights as whale carpaccio and baked turbot that’s sure to satisfy. Its location amongst the picturesque, 18th-century wood buildings and sloping roofs in one of Bergen’s oldest neighborhoods makes for an exemplary atmosphere.
Krok og Krinkel Bokcafè is a charming café situated on a cobblestone street and filled to the brim with books and delicious baked treats. You can easily spend an afternoon here sipping coffee while catching up on the works of some of Norway’s most prolific authors. The fact the cookies and cakes are downright delectable doesn’t hurt.
The allure of 1877 lies in the staff’s ability to make you feel right at home and a straightforward menu that removes all the guesswork. There are a couple of options here, with the three-course meal the best bang for your buck. Wooden tables, exquisite flavors and an extensive wine list make it the best place to dine with a group.
