Top 5 / North America

Living in a big city is superb when it comes to proximity to amenities, easy access to entertainment and a thriving cultural scene. But sometimes the city becomes just a bit overwhelming and a brief escape to a less-hectic environment is necessary. Plan a weekend getaway to one of the towns below, all located within a short drive from major American metropolises.

Providence, R.I.

Located a quick train ride from New York City, the small Rhode Island town is home to the Rhode Island School of Design, evident throughout the architectural beauty. Stroll and window shop along the streets of Westminster for handmade relics, and stop at Al Forno for mouthwatering pizza.

Madison, Wis.

The capital of Wisconsin is a pleasant city break from Chicago, especially in the summer. Midwestern hospitality reigns in this college town where happy hour is practically 24 hours a day. Head down to Memorial Union Terrace for al fresco beers and waterside serenity.

Santa Rosa, Calif.

Wine country surrounds San Francisco, and the options can be hard to narrow down. For a winery experience that feels more like a small town, Santa Rosa’s downtown can serve as a civilized complement to the acres of vineyards.

Boulder, Colo.

Although not much cheaper than it’s larger counterpart down the road (Denver), Boulder makes up for it in outdoor activities, from biking to hiking to rock climbing. Finish the day with deserved brews at Avery Brewery.

St. Petersburg, Fla.

The overlooked Floridian city is attracting more visitors as of late, thanks to its laidback vibe and beaming beaches. Craft cocktails and breweries have popped up to cater to the increasing number of visitors, so go now before the crowds learn about this coastal gem.
