There are dozens of military and war museums in the United States, but only a few of them offer a comprehensive and fascinating look at our nation’s armed forces. If you’re a military buff or simply want to learn more about its history, here are the five museums you can’t miss.
National Infantry Museum
The National Infantry Museum in Fort Benning, Georgia, is a $100 million dollar interactive museum that highlights the efforts of our nation’s infantry soldiers. The museum features dramatic portrayals of battles, ranging from the Siege of Yorktown to the war in Iraq. It even offers rifle range simulators.
National Museum of the Marine Corps
The National Museum of the Marine Corps offers an in-depth experience in the life of a marine cadet, complete with a drill sergeant screaming in your ear. The museum is comprised of interactive reenactments beginning with a landing in the Pacific at Tarawa from World War II.
The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force is both the largest and oldest aviation museum in the United States. It features an impressive display of aircraft used throughout the history of the Air Force. It clocks in at more than 360 aircraft and even has missiles on display.
National WWI Museum and Memorial
The National WWI Museum and Memorial is the second-oldest World War I museum on Earth and boasts a significant amount of artifacts from the war spread across 47 acres. It honors the fallen soldiers of the war and offers incredible insight in many of the most important battles.
The Gettysburg National Military Park and Museum
Finally, every American should visit The Gettysburg National Military Park and Museum at least once. The museum is located on the actual battlefield and has 12 different galleries covering the American Civil War. They include actual artifacts from the battle, and detailed video presentations that make you feel as if you were there. Make sure you opt for the trip to the Union field hospital to learn about the heroic efforts of the medics on the field.
