Tips / Safety

In addition to packing, booking and planning, traveling alone requires a few extra steps of preparation. Traveling solo as a woman presents even more cause for concern in terms of safety and security, especially dependent on the destination. A culture’s values and norms can dictate whether a country is a comfortable place for women to visit on their own, but there are hundreds of locations adequately equipped for the solo female traveler, including (but not limited to) the below.

Australia
The large cities of Sydney and Melbourne are particularly amenable to solo travelers, especially the “alleys” of the latter that are veritable art galleries of murals and graffiti.

Denmark
In a city where bikes are just as prevalent as cars, Copenhagen is easy to explore on two wheels, which also gives travelers a quick escape mode if in an unlikely precarious situation.

Greece
Greece has had its share of struggles in the past few years, but the locals still know how to relax and enjoy life despite the financial crises. Its popularity with foreigners and solo travelers means you’re never too far from a new friend.

New York City
Once riddled with crime, modern-day New York is incredibly pedestrian- and bike-friendly. Solo travelers can find solace in a corner of Central Park or surround themselves with hundreds of others in Times Square.
