Tips / Destination

Given the ongoing economic blockade, shopping isn’t a popular pastime in Cuba.

As a result there are limited options when it comes to buying souvenirs, beyond the cigars and rum you will be offered wherever you go. There are lots of places in Old Havana to buy tourist items like fridge magnets and Che Guevara t-shirts, but check out the following markets across the island to take home something a bit different.

The Almacenes San José Artisans’ Market in Havana is a top spot for arts and crafts. Check out a range of works from paintings to jewelry, and buy your loved ones a unique piece. Down the road in the Plaza de Armas in Old Havana, you’ll find all sorts of antiques on sale at the secondhand book market. It’s mostly books, but you’ll find revolutionary posters and badges for sale, too.

If you are in the colonial city of Trinidad, go to Pena street to check out the market there. You’ll find lace work, wood carvings, ceramics and masks from local artisans for sale.

On the east of the island, Guardalavaca is a small town best known for beautiful beaches. It’s also home to a great flea market set just back from the sea, where good souvenirs can be had at a hefty discount over the prices in Havana.
