Tips / Safety

Whitewater rafting is a thrilling experience. You can go from a calm river to crazy rapids in a matter of moments. For this kind of trip, you don’t want to realize halfway through you’re wearing the wrong kind of shoe. In this instance, shoes can help you keep your balance in the raft. The right shoes can keep you safe while traveling down a river and allow you to have fun and enjoy the ride.

The worst type of shoe to wear is loose-fitting ones. These will fall off at some point from the rapids and leave you shoeless. This will ruin the rest of the ride. Flip-flops are equally horrible because they will slide off. Heavy hiking boots will be a pain and drag you down; also heavier hiking boots are less likely to dry quickly, important on the water. Lastly, any shoes with exposed toes are not ideal because there are tons of rocks that can smash or even break your toes.

The best shoes are closed-toe hiking sandals or hybrid water shoes. They have great grip on slippery surfaces and can dry quickly. They’re also easy to clean and can be hosed down after the trip. Trail running shoes like Nike or Adidas are also good for whitewater rafting. Shoes are important on a day spent on the water and will keep you safe and comfortable
