You may think fresh seafood is all Florida has to offer the culinary scene, but the state has so much more than shrimp or the catch of the day. Try one of these Florida classics during your next visit.

Definitely seafood, but not on many menus elsewhere, conch is best served in Key West. After all, it’s not called The Conch Republic for no reason. You can find this decorative mollusk served in chowders, ceviche, sandwiches and more. Go to Sloppy Joe’s, a favorite of Hemingway’s, and try the conch fritters or conch chowder.

Have an adventurous palate? Head to The Pit Bar-B-Q in Miami for a local, down-home feel served up with gator just about any way you’d like. Burgers, sausages, ribs and bites — you’ll find it all.

Of course, if you’re already in Miami, you can’t leave without trying a classic Cuban sandwich. Go to Versailles, which has proclaimed itself the most famous Cuban restaurant in the world. The Cuban sandwich is a steal at $6.50 and stacked with pork, Swiss cheese, mustard and pickles.

The dessert of Florida? Key lime pie, of course. Even if you’re not terribly keen on lime, it’s a must-have when you’re in the state. The highly acclaimed Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe is the place to go. If you can’t make it to Florida for a craving fix, they ship out pies and pie bars three times a week to everywhere in the continental United States.
