Tips / Destination

There’s nothing better than spending a summer weekend strolling through a farmers market for the freshest ingredients or a local snack. Here are a few you’ll definitely want to check out during your domestic travels.

Union Square Greenmarket in New York is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, giving you several days to choose for your shopping. You’ll find around 140 farmers who come into the city to sell a variety of products, from produce and preserves to flowers and fish. Almost 60,000 visitors a day visit to shop, tour and watch live cooking demonstrations from local chefs.

Pike Place Market is a well-recognized setting in Seattle. The market encompasses nine acres and is one of the country’s oldest. Beyond the wares brought in by local farmers, you’ll also find plenty of crafts, antiques, books, specialty international foods and ready-to-eat items.

In Chicago’s Lincoln Park, Green City Market is open through the summer and early fall every Wednesday and Saturday. An indoor market is also held at Lincoln Park November through April. There’s a little bit of everything to be had, from cheese and crepes to tofu and tomatoes. Stop in for their annual chefs’ barbecue held July 21 for a tasting event featuring the market’s best.

The Charleston Farmers Market runs every Saturday and attracts locals and visitors alike to the beautiful downtown. Enjoy great food, local art, live music and a line-up of fun, family-friendly events.
