The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore isn’t a typical art museum. The museum and education center promotes intuitive and self-taught art from non-classically trained individuals.
The museum’s mission statement states: Visionary art as defined for the purposes of the American Visionary Art Museum refers to art produced by self-taught individuals, usually without formal training, whose works arise from an innate personal vision that revels foremost in the creative act itself.
Its exhibitions aim to inspire and display spontaneous and individualized works. Currently, the museum is home to a 4,000-piece permanent collection by artists including Ted Gordon, Judith Scott, Vollis Simpson, Howard Finster and Deborah Berger.
The main building boasts three floors of exhibition space for its permanent and special exhibitions. The Jim Rouse Visionary Center holds event space and other special exhibits. A sculpture barn and wildflower garden separates the two buildings. Dine at the museum’s on-site restaurant, Encantada (encantadabaltimore.com) during your visit.
Located in Baltimore’s Federal Hill neighborhood, the museum is open Tuesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Adult admission costs $15.95.
