How to Travel Cheaply as a Solo Traveler

Tips / Travel

Traveling solo can be a fun experiment in budgeting. Solo travelers have the freedom to splurge on a pricey daytrip or to skimp and buy all meals from a supermarket, forgoing the expensive restaurant dinners. For travelers who are seeking more of the latter, here are a few tips for an inexpensive trip on your own.

Book a bed anywhere. Travelers who are on their own have the most flexibility regarding accommodation on the road. Rather than searching for a room for two or more, solo travelers have the ability to couch surf, crash on a single bed in a homestay or even book a hotel room as a single traveler. Rates can sometimes be cheaper when booking a room for one person instead of two.

Research for free days. Certain museums and attractions often have one or two days a week where free admission is available. Without having another companion to worry about, arrange your trip around these free admission days and see what you want to see.

Eat in. Saving on food is probably the easiest part of solo travel. Supermarkets are your best bet when searching for cheap and local food. If you book a room in a hostel or guesthouse with a kitchen, prep your own dinner and save your money for a daytime lunch when restaurant menus are cheaper.
