Travel Tips for Women

Traveling solo as a woman can be empowering, but unfortunately, there are still precautions women must take when hitting the road on their own, especially to specific destinations.

Know the code

Research the dress code of the country before you visit. If it is a primarily Muslim culture, women are expected to cover their skin from head to toe. This can help prevent unwanted attention as well as harmful rays from damaging your skin.

Walk when you can

Although walking might not always be the safest way to get around (especially at night) too much flying and sitting can put you at a serious risk for blood clots, especially if you are on birth control. Before, during and after your flight, make sure to take a few paces around the baggage carousel or up and down the aisles to promote blood flow and reduce the risk for clots. Also consider investing in a pair of compression socks for your flight.

Plan for safety

Ask your hotel or hostel to point out the bad areas of town on a map so you know what neighborhoods to avoid. If you must wear a bag while sightseeing, opt for an over-the-shoulder bag so you can keep an eye on your belongings, and so they can more difficult to snatch. When planning your trip ahead of time, map out routes and try to know where you’re going, if possible. Whipping out a map in broad daylight on the street can make you a target for theft and scams.
