Traveling with Herbs or Spices

Traveling home with herbs or spices can be an unpredictable experience. The restrictions and laws change so frequently and without notice you’re never too sure what you can and can’t bring home.

One of the best ways around this dilemma is by checking the U.S. Border Security website at www.cbp.gov. This is the first place to be updated and thus gives you the closest estimation as to whether or not your herbs or spices are going to be confiscated, or even if you can expect to be held up a while as you’re questioned and/or searched.

To make it an easier experience, it’s also a good idea to take professionally packed products. Something you picked and threw into a bag to take home is going to look suspicious. Don’t put yourself in a position like that, as you might be held up at customs to the point of missing your flight.

Equally as important is making sure to declare everything. If you’re not sure, just declare it. It makes everything a lot easier at customs if you start with truth and honesty. Trying to sneak Italian oregano, some smoked paprika or fresh basil leaves into the United States in your luggage is likely to land you in some sort of altercation with the law that could easily be avoided.

Following these easy rules should almost guarantee you a successful journey home with your spices or herbs. However, there are some exceptions and it can happen that your items are confiscated. Either way, professional packaging and an honest declaration will make your life a lot easier than explaining what that suspicious-looking powder or herb is to the guys at border patrol or customs!
