Traveling With Family As an Adult

Family vacations as a child could either be a great source of fun or a tremendous train wreck, depending on your family’s dynamics and ability to spend long periods of time together. As an adult, it gets a lot easier, but there are still challenges to navigate.

Agree on a Schedule

One of the joys of adulthood is you don’t have to do everything your parents tell you. Now that you’re grown, you’re free to sleep in all you want. It’s just important that before you head out on that family trip you plan your days ahead of time. If you want to spend the morning in bed, have at it, but let others know so they’re not waiting for you in the hotel room.

Feel Free to Separate

You no longer need to hold your parent’s hand, or vice versa, now that you’re grown. If you don’t see eye-to-eye on places to visit during your stay, feel free to go your separate ways for a bit. This way, everyone sees the sights they want to see (and gets a much-needed break) and then you can meet up later for more family bonding.

Offer to Pay

We’re not saying you have to pay your parents’ way for everything, but covering their hotel room or dinner is a nice gesture. Remember, they always paid for yours when you were growing up. Consider it a thank you for all the years they didn’t get to go out drinking on vacation because you had a 9 p.m. bedtime.

Get Separate Rooms

This is a must for most families. Make sure you and your parents stay in separate rooms. Sure, it’ll cost more, but the sanity you retain will make up for lost money. You’re grown, there’s no reason your parents need to know your sleeping habits.
