Belize is a fascinating place to spend some time, and there is more to it than the Caribbean beaches.
If you land in Belize City, get out as soon as you can. There is nothing really to see here, and the city has a bad reputation for crime. Hop on a boat to Caye Caulker, where you can snorkel, dive and fish to your heart’s content.
After a couple of days, get another boat up to Ambergris Caye to check out the Ho Chal Marine Reserve. It’s more expensive here than Caye Caulker, but there are hostels for budget travelers.
Now head back to the mainland and catch a bus to Placencia to relax on the amazing beaches. Next up is Dangriga, where the Marie Sharp’s hot sauce factory is located. You’ll no doubt see the sauce all over Belize, and now you can visit the place it’s made. Alternatively, visit the Gulisi Garifuna Museum to find out more about the local Garifuna culture.
Finally it’s time to head inland to San Ignacio, where you can go horse riding to see waterfalls and Mayan ruins, or canoe down the Macal River. It’s a top spot for adventure travelers and a real contrast to the relaxed beach vibes of the previous week.
