Tips / Destination

The area may be most famous as the home of Cancun and other beach resorts, but there are huge numbers of other attractions in the Yucatan.

The peninsula boasts a huge number of attractions, both natural and manmade. From spectacular nature reserves to ancient Mayan ruins, there is plenty to entertain visitors with a wide variety of tastes.

Most people will start their trip in Cancun, where cheap flights are easy to find. Spend a day or two in town to find out what makes it so well known, but then head to Holbox for a more relaxed beach experience.

Take in the colonial marvels of the city of Merida for a few days, and make sure to get involved with the famously raucous party scene. Cross over to the eastern side of the peninsula to visit the Sian-Ka’an biosphere reserve, and then take a step further back in time at the Mayan ruins near Tulum. Relax with some beach time on the stretch of sand underneath the ruins.

Visit the Gran Cenote near Tulum, and head further inland to the ruins at Coba. The next day it’s time to head to Cenote Azul outside Playa del Carmen, before a couple of beach days to recharge your batteries at the end of your trip.
