Two Weeks in the Yucatan, Mexico

The Yucatan peninsula might be most famous as the home of Cancun and its all-inclusive megahotels, but there is more to see in the area. Skip out of Cancun when you get off your plane and head to Puerto Morelos, a charming fishing village just half an hour south of the big city. Relax for a couple of days to recover from your flight, eating the catch of the day on the beach, and then head off.

The next stop is Tulum, a two-hour drive down the coast. Here, visit the Mayan ruins on the coast, enjoy the beaches and swim in the limestone sinkholes known as cenotes that dot the area. Cenote Dos Ojos is one of the most famous, while smaller ones, such as Cenote Cristal, are quieter.

From Tulum, continue south to the town of Bacalar. Stay on the shores of the Lagoon of Seven Colours, and take a boat trip to explore its beautiful waters.

Head inland to Merida, the American Capital of Culture 2017, to get a taste of colonial city life. There are lots of cultural events going on this year, amazing restaurants and great museums.

After Merida, go see the imposing Mayan pyramid at Chechen Itza. It’s a great reminder of the Mayan influence on this region and an impressive site.

To finish your trip, spend a few days on Isla Holbox. This peaceful island is home to amazing beaches, populations of flamingos and even whale sharks during the summer months.
