The 2016 edition of the annual event sees the world’s top cyclists travel to Doha, Qatar, to compete in road race and individual time trial competitions.
As a sport, cycling continues to grow in popularity, with interest boosted by events such as the recent Olympic Games in Rio. One of the next big events on the calendar is the Road World Championships, which will take place in Doha Oct. 9–16.
Since 1921, cyclists from across the globe have competed with their national teams at the world championships. In 2016 about 1,000 cyclists from 75 countries will take part in a road race and time trial events in the deserts of Qatar. It might seem like a strange choice of location for any sort of sporting event with daily highs of around 35 degrees Celsius, but the setting is sure to provide a spectacular backdrop.
Defending men’s Road Champion Peter Sagan will be back to defend his title from rivals competing for the right to wear the famous rainbow jersey throughout the next year. Top sprinters such as Great Britain’s Mark Cavendish and Andre Greipel are sure to be in attendance, which is expected to end in a bunch finish.
Attending the event will be made easier thanks to an exclusive discount for cycling fans who want to visit Doha for the championships, as well as special fan-only rates at local hotels. Doha is well connected thanks to national airline Qatar Airways, which offers flights around the world.
Find out more information at the event’s official website.
