The Norwegian city of Bergen will host the road cycling world championships from Sept. 16–24. Cyclists from around the world will compete to win the right to wear the coveted rainbow jersey of the world champion for the rest of the cycling season. Riders race in three events: team time trial, individual time trial and road race.
There will be 12 races over nine days and the championships are expected to attract around 500,000 spectators to the streets of Bergen. You can watch the races from anywhere along the route, or buy a ticket to a fan zone or arena.
A gold ticket to the Bryggen Arena costs €186, where you will have a guaranteed seat inside a heated tent. The average temperature at this time of year is around 10 degrees Celsius, so an inside seat isn’t a bad idea!
Norway’s second-largest city is a popular spot with tourists, who come to see the seven mountains which surround the picturesque port. Over the course of 900 years Bergen has seen plenty of changes, from the Viking Age to the wealth of modern Norway.
Be prepared to spend a decent chunk of change if you do visit, thanks to the strong Norwegian krone. If you’ve saved a bit of money, you’ll have a great time.
