Under $100 / Latin America

The colonial marvels of the “White City” of Arequipa could keep you occupied for days, but the highlights can be seen in 24 hours if you are in a rush.

Take a stroll down UNESCO-protected streets to the central market, where a typical eggs-and-beans breakfast can be yours for $3.50. Take a look around the stalls before emerging back into the streets, marveling at the sillar (a type of white rock) buildings that lend Arequipa its nickname.

The Convento de Santa Catalina ($11) is the most visited attraction in town for good reason, and it’s a must-see for any visitor. Take a few hours to explore the huge complex, before lunch at a traditional roast chicken restaurant ($5). Many can be found on Calle Santo Domingo to the west of the main square.

Head to Museo Santuario Andino ($6), where you will find the mummified remains of a child sacrificed by the Inca. Known as Juanita, the tiny figure was preserved in ice before being dug up by archaeologists. The museum serves as a reminder that despite the fact there are no Incam ruins in the town center, the mountains around Arequipa are full of traces of the old civilization.

Treat yourself to dinner at the opulent Zig Zag restaurant, where a platter of alpaca, beef and pork costs around $40. If you feel like dancing to house and techno, Deja Vu is open until 3 a.m. (beers $3), while the Casona Forum pumps out Latin pop and reggaeton.
