Begin your day with breakfast at the delectable Strawberry Fare. This little eatery serves organic, free-range, dairy-free, gluten-free and diabetic offerings for reasonable prices. They also roast their own coffee and hold cooking classes for aspiring bakers. Grab a plate of eggs Florentine with sautéed spinach and hollandaise for a little more than $12.

Take a walk around Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, which opens every day at 9:30 a.m. Exhibits feature indigenous, endangered species in their natural habitats. The Reserve houses more than 500 animals, including wallabies, kiwi birds and takahe. Adult tickets are only $19.

Stop by the Christchurch Farmers’ Market for a stroll through the various vendor stalls and a quick bite for lunch. The market is located on the Riccarton House grounds, the former home of the Deans Family, founding family of Canterbury. You’ll find quite a few vendors offer ready-to-eat products. Try a local and organic salad from Bear Lion Foods for $8 and a fresh fruit smoothie from Pure Pulp for around $5.

If you don’t mind a bit of driving, head to Fyffe House for a $7 tour of the last remaining building from the 1842 whaling station. The building’s foundations are made from whale vertebrae and the surrounding waters are perfect for whale sighting. The house also contains archaeological findings from the property, including tools for harvesting whale oil and various objects made from the harvested whales.

Tequila Mockingbird is a great choice for dinner. Try the free-farmed pork belly with black beans and collard greens for $19, or 12-hour roasted lamb shoulder with carrots and quinoa for $20. After your meal, you can go right next door to the owners’ bar and club, Revival Bar. Revival Bar has a fun and wonky atmosphere where every part of the building and décor has been reclaimed, like the lounge seats made from trunks of both the luggage and the automobile variety.
