Unlike much of Washington State’s Pacific Ocean beaches, Long Beach is wide, flat and largely free of obstacles like rocks and enormous piles of driftwood. This stretch of sand — and its accompanying town — are popular with vacationers, but they’re not overrun by glitzy condos and hotels. Instead, they feel accessible and welcoming, down to earth and inexpensive.
Start your day at Bailey’s Bakery and Café, a popular spot with locals just north of Long Beach. Whether you opt for a simple — but impeccable — scone or a breakfast sandwich and cup of locally roasted coffee, you’ll make out for less than $15.
Spend time exploring the quaint town of Long Beach, whose downtown encompasses just a handful of blocks near the beach. Shop for souvenirs, ride bumper cars or go-karts, play mini golf or just stroll along the beach’s boardwalk to the gray whale skeleton. Don’t miss the World Kite Museum & Hall of Fame ($5 for adults) and the kitschy Marsh’s Free Museum, claiming to feature “Jack the Alligator Man and many other curiosities.” Lunch can be purchased in town at several spots for around $20.

Consider taking a free tour of the Cranberry Museum and bogs or heading to Cape Disappointment State Park for a hike. Just $5 gets you a day pass to explore the myriad trails and overlooks, plus two lighthouses.
Finally, end your day at top-notch but under-the-radar spot Nanci & Jimella’s, where your remaining $60 can be spent on cocktails (discounted at happy hour) and entrees like pan-fried local oysters and crab and shrimp mac ‘n’ cheese.
